What if Joy Comes First?

A Different Way to Think About Money, Abundance, and What You Actually Deserve

Your Joy Is Your Resistance

Finding gratitude is hard right now. When we are watching our systems collapse. When we are watching things, we took for granted be taken from us. When we are watching injustice across the board -- watching our neighbors be harmed, watching atrocities unfold, experiencing the very beginnings of an energy crisis we spent our entire lives hoping we would never have to live through.

If we are in this space -- how the f*** can we feel gratitude? How do we come to a place and say "oh, things are great" -- because they don't feel great.

I always want to hold space for that. Things don't feel flipping great right now. And there is still always room for joy and gratitude. And let me be absolutely clear:

Your joy and your gratitude is part of your resistance.

Your ability to look oppression in the face and say, "I love myself. I'm grateful for what I have. I'm f'ing alive and I f'ing exist." Finding your joy, dancing, eating good food, hugging, loving, singing, coming together in community -- or sometimes just by yourself -- that is resistance. We can't survive with out it.

Find your joy. Find your gratitude.

Bonus, joy and gratitude are free-.99 and they will bring you into so much alignment it will blow you away.

Start Here: One Material Thing

Before we get into any of the practical stuff, I want you to find one thing you are grateful for right now. And I actually encourage you to make it a material thing -- because material things are what we use our money for in a lot of ways. We associate money with the material. So finding gratitude in the material is a powerful bridge.

Maybe it is the device you are reading this on. Maybe it is the chair you are sitting in, the car, the house, the coffee shop. Maybe it is the coffee you are sipping, the tea, the snack you are nibbling. Whatever is in your physical presence right now -- find it. Look at it. Enjoy it. Share gratitude with it. Express to the universe how grateful you are that you get to have this thing in your life.

That is where we start.

The Joy-First Model: Growing Real Abundance

Traditional financial advice tells us to budget first, spend second, and enjoy last -- if there is anything left, which there usually isn't. I want to flip that.

The joy-first model is adapted from the Profit First framework for business owners. The idea is simple: we designate a percentage of our income for joy before we assign everything else. Not as an afterthought. Not as a reward for being disciplined enough. As a non-negotiable part of how our money flows.

Ideally, 10-20% of your income lives in the joy category. But that is not always possible, and that is okay. If all you can find is 1%, I don't care if it is $5 a paycheck for a piece of Casey's breakfast pizza. (I love Casey's breakfast pizza, btw. It makes me happy.) Whatever your version of that is, budget for your joy. It is not optional. It is the whole point.

The Four-Category Boundary Flow

I don't call it a budget. I call it a Boundaried Flow. Because we are not just managing money, we are managing our resources. And when we can find a flow that actually works for us and put guardrails around it that make sense, we start to find a little less white knuckling, a little less hustling, and a lot more flow.

Here are the four categories:

  1. Joy + Alignment -- What makes your soul sing? This comes first. Whatever amount you can set aside -- even $5 -- designate it for joy before anything else.

  2. Foundation + Security -- What keeps you safe and stable? Food in the fridge, lights on, a safe warm home. These are your non-negotiables, held with intention rather than dread.

  3. Growth + Investment -- This is loving your future self. I had a client who felt crushing guilt every time she had to use her emergency savings. I told her: that money is a gift from your past self to your future self. When you save, you are telling future you: I've got your back. When you have to use it someday, spend genuine gratitude toward the version of you who made that possible.

  4. The Letting Go Category -- What is no longer aligned? What can we release? This might be an obligation spend that doesn't bring you joy, or it might be finding a values-aligned alternative. I love audiobooks and I could not give up my Libro.fm subscription. But I swapped Audible for Libro, which supports local independent bookstores, because the thing I love and the values I want to spend from needed to be in the same place.

Look at Your Spending Like a Scientist, Not a Judge

Here is the practical piece. At some point outside of reading this, I want you to look at where your money is actually going. Download the last three months of transactions -- we are at the end of Q1, which gives you solid, holiday-free data -- and go through them.

Do this from the perspective of a scientist looking for data. Not a prosecutor gathering evidence of your failures. These are just numbers. You are simply asking: is my money flowing through constructed aqueducts toward the life I want to build, or is it like a little baking soda volcano, just creating its own streams wherever it finds an opening?

No shame. Just awareness. Awareness is always where it starts.

Then ask yourself two things: what do I love spending money on, that genuinely brings me joy? And what am I spending money on out of obligation, fear, or someone else's should? Notice the gap. That gap is where your Boundary Flow begins.

Have Your Chocolate!

A dietitian I follow talked about her recovery from disordered eating. She shifted from restriction to addition. Instead of "I shouldn't have this chocolate," she went to: yes to the chocolate, and yes to the protein, yes to the carbs, and yes to the fiber. She ended up with a full, nourishing plate -- and her chocolate.

Look at your money the same way. You do have to live within a flow, that is the world we exist in right now. But how can you have your chocolate and make sure you have everything else you need too?

A good flow should nourish you, not starve you.
